San Francisco State University's School of Social Work offers a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) degree, which is the foundational professional degree in the field of social work. This program has a generalist practice curriculum that prepares students to enter many fields of practice serving multiple sizes of systems, including individuals, families, groups, communities, and the broader society. To complete the degree, students are required to take a series of courses followed by field experience in a social service agency. The School is fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
Students may declare their major in social work and enter the program during fall semesters. To start, students must have completed both Segments I and II of the SFSU general education curriculum (or equivalent) and have junior standing at San Francisco State University. Students are admitted as a cohort group each fall semester only. As a cohort group, students typically begin and end the program at the same time. Students attend full-time, and they are expected to complete their BASW degree in two years.
Applicants must first meet the general university requirements pertaining to the admission of undergraduate students. Admission into the School of Social Work requires submission of two separate applications. Unless they are already enrolled at San Francisco State University, prospective students must be admitted into San Francisco State University Undergraduate Studies and the School of Social Work. The deadline for application to San Francisco State University is November 30, 2009. In addition, official transcripts including grades from work completed during the fall of 2009 should be submitted to University Admissions by February 15, 2009. The deadline for the application to the School of Social Work is February 15, 2010. A complete admission application to the School of Social Work’s Baccalaureate Program can be accessed through this page.
There are 4 required prerequisites that applicants must complete and pass with either a “C-“ or letter grade prior to admission into the BASW Program. They include introductory-level courses in human biology (BIO 100 or equivalent; lab not required), macroeconomics (ECON 100 or ECON 305 or equivalent), psychology (PSY 200 or equivalent), and sociology (SOC 105 or equivalent).
Students are required to maintain a minimum grade of "C" in ALL courses within the major. With a grade lower than C, students will be required to repeat the class and will be unable to register for subsequent courses in the sequence where the failed course is a prerequisite. The social work courses (except for SW 350: Child Welfare) are presently offered only ONCE per year, and if a student falls out of sequence in required courses, they may delay graduation. Prior to graduation, students must complete the graduate writing assessment requirement (GWAR). To meet the requirement, students may take SW 301, which is designated a GWAR course.
All social work majors must complete an internship during the fall and spring semesters of their senior year (240 hours each semester in an outside agency). Students may register for and enter the field experience in the social services (SW 503 [Fall] and SW 505 [Spring]) and its accompanying seminar on the field experience (SW 502 [Fall] and 504 [Spring]) after completing 24 units of required junior-level social work courses with a "C" grade or better in each. In addition, the student must have completed the required number of units to be classified as a senior at SFSU.
