Psychosocial Rehabilitation in Social Work (1 Unit)
This overview of psychosocial rehabilitation will introduce the principles, ethics, values, knowledge and skills practitioners need to provide services to people with severe and persistent mental illness. It is hope-generating, recovery-oriented and emphasizes the therapeutic use of strengths, environments, cultures and communities. In an interactive manner, students will learn a brief history of the field, identify some "best practice" models and identify important policy and practice issues facing the PSR practitioner

Program Description
The SFSU School of Social Work will have 10 stipends of $18,500 that will be available for full-time 2nd year students committed to public health. The upcoming application process will take place in Spring semester 2009 for MSW 2nd year students who expect to graduate in 2010 and will have a field placement in public mental health. Students who accept the stipend are required to "payback" the stipend through competency training courses and one-year of employment in public mental health.
Eligibility (criteria overview **)
Mandatory
- Second year full-time MSW student as of Fall 2009, graduating Spring 2010
- Field placement in qualifying agency (county mental/behavioral health program or their contract agency) providing voluntary treatment
- Good academic standing
- Good standing with field work education
- Able to pass a background check
- Able to demonstrate motivation to work in public mental health
- Agree to fulfill a one-year work commitment in an approved mental health agency upon graduation
Highly Desirable
- Experience with, or knowledge of the recovery model
- Able to reflect the diverse client populations in California
- Posses a second language
- Have direct or familial experience with the mental health system
