Biography

Brian de Vries, Ph.D. is a Professor of Gerontology at SFSU. He received his doctoral degree in life-span developmental psychology from the University of British Columbia in 1988, and was a post-doctoral fellow at both Simon Fraser University in Vancouver and the University of Southern California. He is a fellow of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA), Board member of the American Society on Aging (ASA), and co-Chair of the LGBT Aging Issues Network constituent group. Most recently, Dr. de Vries has become a policy advisor for the AARP California. He is editor of Sexuality Research and Social Policy, an online academic journal, and former associate editor of The International Journal of Aging and Human Development (2000-2006). Dr. de Vries has served as guest editor of Omega: Journal of Death and Dying (1997 and 2004), and guest co-editor of Generations (2001). In addition, he has edited four books, including Kinship Bereavement in Later Life (1997), End of Life Issues (1999), Narrative Gerontology (2001), and Gay and Lesbian Aging (2004); has authored or co-authored over 75 articles and book chapters; and has given over 100 presentations to professional audiences.
