Biography

Eileen F. Levy, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of the School of Social Work. She received a BA in Psychology from The City College of New York, and MSSW and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Prior to coming to San Francisco State in 1991, she was on the social work faculty at George Williams College and Aurora University in Illinois, and University of Maryland at Baltimore. Dr. Levy has taught a broad range of social work courses in both BASW and MSW programs throughout her 32 years in social work education, with a focus on cultural competence and social work theory and practice. Her research has primarily addressed LGBT issues with a focus on lesbian families.

Beginning with the 2015-2016 academic year, Dr. Levy entered the Faculty Early Retirement Program (FERP), and will be teaching during the fall semester until she fully retires from the university. For ten years, from 2001 to 2015, Dr. Levy served as Director of the School of Social Work. As the School’s Director, she served as Principal Investigator for two CalSWEC-administered (California Social Work Education Center) grants: the Title IV-E Child Welfare Training Grant, and the Mental Health Stipend Program. Dr. Levy represented the School of Social Work in various community and professional boards and associations. In 2012-2013, she participated in the fifth cohort of the Social Work Leadership Institute-Leadership Academy in Aging, which provides deans and directors with leadership training in aging through a partnership with the National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work (NADD) and the New York Academy of Medicine. Dr. Levy was an active member of NADD and its statewide counterpart, CADD (California Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work), and served as CADD President from 2013-2015. She represented the School of Social Work at the Bay Area Social Services Consortium, an agency-university-foundation partnership that promotes social service research, training and policy development. Dr. Levy was elected to serve as a member of the Committee on Nominations and Leadership, Regions A&C, for NASW-CA in 2013-2014.
