Social, Action and Change (SAC)

This concentration focuses on change strategies, resource mobilization, and advocacy to achieve social justice. In the context of micro and macro environments, focus is on theories, methods and practices leading to innovation and change to improve the lives of historically oppressed under-served and under-represented populations.

Students study and analyze policies, assess organizations and community needs, influence and shape decisions, build coalitions, engage as activists, and develop action plans, equitable processes, and just solutions. Practitioner roles include analyst, activist, advocate, organizer, planner, developer, programmer, instigator, innovator, researcher and implementer.

There are two basic types of SAC placements: Community-based workplace (union), or public interest organizations where social development is the principal focus. A social agency or host institution (such as hospital or school) where direct social services are the primary focus. In this case, a specific agreement that combines a social development emphasis and assignments (at least 75% if workload) with some social services responsibility is necessary.

The second-year field placement must include the following experiences:

  • Mobilizing a group of people for a specific change goal such as; organizing a labor strike, changing an unjust law or helping enact a just one, improving a particular condition in an organization, community, city, or country and so forth.
  • Program planning and development education and training political lobbying social research.
