Biography

Brian McGhee has been in the field of Social Work for over 30 years. His professional experience includes working in Alameda County Foster Care, Alameda County Juvenile Probation, HIV Education, Parenting Teens, and West Oakland Mental Health. Through each of these roles, he has remained committed to serving communities with integrity, compassion, and cultural awareness.

Brian is a first-generation college graduate. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Social Welfare from UC Berkeley and his Master of Social Work from San Francisco State University. He is currently in his third year serving as a Seminar Lecturer.

His work focuses on culturally responsive engagement, best practices in clinical social work, medical social work, group facilitation, individual counseling, community engagement, advocacy, outreach, and addressing systemic barriers that impact historically marginalized communities.

Brian’s lived experience, professional practice, and deep commitment to social justice inform his approach to mentorship, advocacy, and community empowerment. As a lecturer, he brings real-world experience navigating urban systems and implementing equity-driven intervention strategies, preparing future social workers to practice with cultural humility, integrity, and accountability to the communities they serve.
