Biography

Melanie Fukuhara is a Bay Area native and proud San Francisco State University alumna who earned both her Bachelor of Arts in Social Work (BASW) and Master of Social Work (MSW) from the SFSU School of Social Work. She brings over 10 years of experience as a practicing social worker, during which she worked closely with individuals, families, and communities facing complex social and systemic challenges.

After more than a decade in direct practice, Melanie pivoted to a career in education, teaching justice-impacted populations within carceral education settings before moving into school leadership inside the county jail system. She spent five years teaching prior to transitioning into administrative leadership and has served as a Principal for the past five years. In these roles, she has provided instructional leadership, program development, and systems-level support with a strong emphasis on equity, trauma-informed practice, and student success.

Melanie holds an Adult Career Technical Education (CTE) credential and is currently completing her Single Subject Credential in English. She is also a certified yoga instructor with an emphasis on social-emotional learning (SEL) and trauma-informed practices. Melanie has a deep commitment and passion for supporting people in need and is dedicated to preparing future social workers through education that is grounded in lived experience, social justice, and compassionate practice.
