Public Behavioral Health MSW Training Program
SF State MSW program, in partnership with San Jose State University Research Foundation provides Public Behavioral Health Training stipends to Master of Social Work (MSW) students who want to work in public behavioral health.
The program grants approximately ten stipends to second-year MSW students (paid in two installments) committed to working in the field of public behavioral health (PBH). The stipend award is for second-year MSW students only and is $25,000 for the second academic year. During the second semester of the first year of MSW study, interested students apply for this competitive grant program. Students must meet all core MSW program requirements, intern at a PBH qualified site during their second year and participate in all grant-specified requirements.
Interested students should submit a completed PBH Training Program application in the late spring of the first year after securing a qualified PBH placement for their second year internship.
- Trainees must be U.S citizens, U.S. nationals, or foreign nationals who possess visas permitting permanent residence in the States. Trainees must be able to provide proof of U.S. citizenship, U.S. national or foreign national status or qualify as a U.S. permanent resident.
- Students living in the U.S. on temporary or student visas cannot commit to the fulfillment of the service obligation associated with training program participation and, thus, are not eligible.
Advanced year internship placement providing social work services in publicly funded behavioral health care programs and settings.
- Setting must serve underserved populations and/or areas
- Placements may include (but not limited to) community clinics, outpatient and residential treatment programs, inpatient psychiatric units, schools, school districts, SELPAs, regional centers, inpatient and outpatient health care settings, child welfare units, juvenile delinquency programs, and adult corrections settings.
- Qualified sites offer training experiences focused on preparing students for the realities of public behavioral health practice.
- Enroll in S W 840 in the Spring semester
- PBH Training Program Seminar: approximately monthly seminar meetings for PBH trainee
- Participation in occasional program meetings and trainings with trainees, faculty, and field supervisors
- Providing updated contact info and employment data to The San Jose State University Research Foundation for three years after MSW graduation
